Electric Vehicles: What are they and am I ready to own one?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are no longer the stuff of the future. They are increasingly joining Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)/convetional petrol cars on the roads, offering a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient driving experience. As the world grapples with climate change and air pollution, EVs are emerging as one of the solutions to our transport needs.

What are Electric Vehicles?
There are two main types of EVs:

i) Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): These run entirely on electricity stored in a large onboard battery pack. BEVs have a driving range of typically between 400 and 700 kilometers on a single charge, making them suitable for most daily commutes.

i) Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): PHEVs combine an electric motor with a traditional gasoline engine. They can run for a limited distance on electric power alone, but also have the gasoline engine as a backup for longer trips.

Why Go Electric?

Challenges and Considerations

Despite their advantages, EVs also come with some real world challenges and may just not be a practicle choice foe everone, just yet :

Charging Infrastructure: While charging stations are becoming more widespread, availability can be a concern, especially for long-distance travel and regional areas….or really outside our capitals and regional centres.

Charging Time: Fully charging an EV can take several hours, although faster-charging DC stations are becoming more common, but not nearly enough so.

Battery Range: While improving, the range of EVs may not be suitable for everyone’s needs, particularly those who frequently take long road trips or trips to far outside our regional centres, the Range Anxiety can be crippling.

Limited Commercial Choices: Yes, some utes, 4WDs and even trucks are now being offered as EVs, but lets clear. Australia has a long running love affair with its bastard child, the Ute and now the MUCH larger work vehicles that our tradies and workmen love to drive to the job site in and there is currently just not a lot of options for this cohort to choose that are not pertol or deisel.

The Future of EVs

The future of transportation is electric. Governments around the world are setting ambitious targets for EV adoption, and automakers are continuously innovating to improve battery range, charging speeds, and affordability. At the time of writing, the Quuensland Government has various strategys inplace to aim to have 50% of new passenger vehicle sales to be zero emission by 2030, moving to 100% by 2036.
